Well, we can all relax, sort of. The MNR today announced their intentions to make
changes to the walleye regs which include KEEPING the 2 fish limit, but making anything less than 46cm off limits to sport fishers.
Their reasoning is that the larger spawners are disappearing while the smaller future spawners are not making it successfully through the gauntlet of commercial and non-commercial anglers to reach spawning age. These smaller future spawners need to be protected, straight and simple. If not, the bottom would eventually fall out of the fishery. Also consider this: a larger walleye of say 20 inches would be the table fare equivalent of 2 x 15 inchers, non? Problem is in finding those fish in the 46cm and up range. According to a few fishing operators here on the South Shore, those fish are still here and catchable. All in all, I think this is a positive move on the part of the MNR.
The LNSA would like to thank Vic Fideli
for putting consistent pressure on the Provincial Govt. regarding these current
regs and their effect on our local tourism. Vic has been an effective and
welcomed supporter of the LNSA and we applaud him for his efforts!
